I agree, go to musiciansfriend.com or music123.com, samash.com, zzounds.com and so on. I am an Ibanez fan and can't think of a more versatile guitar, so if you can spend some $350, look for any of the RG guitars, they can do so much and you can even play them professionally when you get really good. Alternatively, Yamahas are fairly good and reasonably priced. Fenders are decent and relatively cheap, too (Mexican), but American Fender and any Gibsons are insanely overpriced for what they offer - they do have one or two good sounds each, but paying that much for a one trick pony is silly for a beginner.
