I just started knitting and am trying to make a sweater. I have gotten to the shoulder shaping and am confused at what to do next. The body of the back is 82 stitches across, and it says to bind off 9, work across 46 stitches, and do that again 3 more times. If I do that though, I end up with an uneven shirt it seems. I did the first binding of 9 and worked across 46 and I still have 28 stitches left on that row, so how do I do the next row? Thanks!

There may be a typo, or you may have misread the pattern. This isn't a raglan sleeve, right? It sounds like you need to do four rows of shoulder shaping.

Row 1: Bind off 9, work across the remaining 73 stitches.
Row 2: Bind off 9, work across the remaining 64 stitches.
Row 3: Bind off 9, work across the remaining 55 stitches.
Row 4: Bind off 9, work across the remaining 46 stitches.

At the end of the shoulder shaping you'll have your 46 stitches to do whatever the pattern instructs you to do at the neck. Usually you work them into the collar somehow, but I don't know the pattern.

Good luck!

Hi,
Depending on your pattern if it has raglan sleeves then you need to bind off 9 on each side and you will end up with kind of a triangular shape at the top. This is creating the shaping for the arm hole. When you add the sleeves, they will provide the shaping for the shoulder.
It is difficult to explain knitting online. I would suggest going to a local knitting specialty store and they should be able to help you.

My mother would have to see it before she can answer your question.
