One piranha is a lonely guy indeed. Piranha like other tetras prefer to school. Keep him with similar sized fish that aren't too aggressive and he should be fine.

Contray to the popular image, piranha are shy, rather timid fish that will rarely attack another healthy fish. If fact, some won't even take feeder fish if the feeders are too healthy and are uninjured. They will however attack a healthy fish if they get really hungry, so keep him well fed on plenty of protein rich food.

Your 29 gallon will be just about the right size for one piranha when he is grown, so plan on removing any tank mates you give him and they grow.

you can keep a number of aggressive cichlids, and characin's with a piranha.at one time i had 4 piranha,1 red devil,1 wolf fish (piranha killer, charicin),1 dovii,1 unlucky fire mouth,1 huge oscar. All in a 125 gal tank. The piranha are schooling fish like everyone is saying, so their happier in schools. The 29 gal is a bit small for anything more than probably another young piranha, which is what id go with cause he'll be happier with his own kind. Though your gonna have to move up to a bigger tank fairly soon.Piranha's will get too big for a 29 gal. No matter what alot of people are saying, if you have another extremely aggressive fish such as a red devil, dovii, wolf fish, ect..The fish will be able to hold its own.My red devil would terrorize 4 piranhas by himself.Piranha's are typically skittish (with a few rare breeds being an exception) around other aggressive fish. A wolf fish is another good tank mate. These will kill most piranha,so id have at least a few piranha to 1 wolf..They are loner's though and arent active at all during the day. Remember to have a kick a** filtering system and do 50% water changes weekly when you start getting into these highly carnivorous fish.

There seems to be some conflicting info on this, probably due to differences in behavior in age/size of the fish. Piranhas are a schooling fish when young, so yours may enjoy some company. Recommendations for adult piranhas range from "best kept singly" or "in piranha-only tanks" to well fed individuals can be kept with other fish or similar size or fast-moving fish:

Be aware that a single piranha is okay for a 29 gallon tank, but if you get yours company, you will eventually have to provide larger quarters as it matures.

Any kind of feeder fish small enough for it to eat!

But you should do a web search or buy a book; I don't think piranhas make good 'tank mates' with any other fish, and if you add more piranha I think you aren't supposed to add just one, or they'll just fight...

From the information I've gathered, Piranhas will sooner or later eat anything. From what I've read, neon tetras last a few days, exodons and tiger barbs last longest, but eventually become food. If I were you, I'd recommend getting a screen to seperate the two tankmates. :) No harm in that. Just make sure you have a large enough tank that both fish get enough space.
