First, spelling correctly will get a you a long way. If you can't spell, you won't get through the door.

Although it isn't essential that you have a journalism degree, it's a good idea to get one so you will learn the different writing formats, style, and how to do research and conduct interviews. You can then minor in another subject that interests you, such as political science, history, etc. -- or even add a second major. While in college, write for your campus newspaper and apply for internships at local papers. Your experience at the campus paper and an internship will be invaluable in winning over an editor who's hiring.

But you must spell correctly, all of the time. It has to become second nature. The same goes for punctuation and grammar. Very few editors are willing to spend valuable time correcting careless mistakes.

Go to college and get a degree in Journalism. While you're in school, write for your student newspaper and get internships. Once you graduate, start applying to small weekly newspapers around the country... Once you get a good portfolio going, you'll be able to apply to the daily's.

Learn to spell, capitalize, and punctuate sentences appropriately and make it a habit. After you do that, get at least a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or English.

Then start mailing out resumes and clips until someone finally hires you at a no-name paper, where you may report on everything from city council meetings to storm damage and church socials. After a year of that, send out more resumes and clips to bigger and better papers.
