Would you wash a nice wooden piece of furniture with soap and water? I think if you put a wooden cutting board in a dishwasher, it would tend to dry it out.

Wooden chopping boards are not always one solid piece of wood - they can be made in different ways. However, one thing they all have in common is the fact that an adhesive has been used to join pieces together. This adhesive is likely to be soluble in water with that solubility increasing with temperature. Board will ultimately disintegrate. Also there is the quite real possibility of the board suffering from warp, which actually makes it dangerous to use in conjunction with a sharp knife.

Best way to clean a wooden chopping board is to wipe the boad with a soapy cloth, rinse well and pt dry. Then grind some rock salt and sprinkle on the board, and squeeze the juice of a lemon on top. Rub the board with this antiseptic, but abrasive paste and then wipe dry.

DON'T put the board in the dishwasher!

I wash mine in the dishwasher all the time, but the last one I had eventually fell apart. The glue that holds the pieces together doesn't cope terribly well with the high temperatures. This one is lasting ages though.

Yes it can destroy a good cutting board because the strips of wood are glued together, it will in time dissolve the glue cause cracking and some cutting boards have a finish varnish, polyurethane that can come off and stick to the dishes,Silverware that can make people sick.

Wooden cuttingboards are usually not one slab of wood. They are strips of wood glued together and sanded. The heat from the hot water will melt the glue which causes the board to fall apart. m

Wood will warp and crack by being exposed to the length of time it is wet and the extreme heat in a new dishwasher.

If you want to clean your cutting board, cover with salt, leave for a bit then scrub, rinse thoroughly and dry. This effectively scours the surface of food particles and kills bacteria.

Using heat and water is stone age wood warping technology. But if you don't put deliberate pressure on the wood, it'll simply warp randomly, making it curve in any possible direction. It just makes the board "not flat" anymore.

It may dry out and split the wood.It is also not necessary. Wood has a natural antiseptic quality so just sling it in the sink for a quick scrub!

It really depends of the quality of the wood. My hardwood one was fine but the soft wood was ruined. Why not soak it in boiling hot water and a mild solution of sterilising fluid rinse and scrub with clean brush. Then repeat the process and rinse well to dry properly.

Failing that but a toughend glass one though they can be dangerous when used for chopping as things have a tendency to slip off the board.

Replace your present one with one that is made from one piece of wood instead of being made up with sections of wood.
