Oh MAN -- I just played with a Wii for the first time today, and it's amazing. It's SO MUCH more fun than mashing buttons. You hold the Wiimote in different positions for different games, and move it around to play the game, which is much more natural and engaging than sitting on a couch hitting the A and B buttons while trying to do whatever it is the game consists of.
You do need special Wii games, but there are a few good ones out and more will be coming along every month or so as the platform sells into more and more homes. I was playing "Wario Ware" today, which consists of what appear to be hundreds and hundreds of "micro-games," all designed to highlight some interesting feature of the Wii.
The thing that's so much fun about Wario Ware is that it's done with humor and creativity -- each of the little micro-games is funny in itself but when you complete a micro-game successfully there's a funny little screen with a joke, then you go into the next micro-game. Each level has a bunch of these micro-games in sequence and you accumulate points (and the games get faster as you progress through a level), but that's not what makes it fun.
What makes it so much fun is that you're flapping your arms while the character on the screen is trying to fly while hanging from a balloon, or balancing the Wiimote on your hand while the character on screen is trying to balance a broomstick on end, or shaking the Wiimote while the character on screen is trying to shake all the ants off a banana. A lot of them include in-jokes to other games and game systems (there's one micro-game where you're supposed to insert a cartridge into the Super Nostalgic Entertainment System, which happens to look exactly like a Super NES -- and while you play this game you hear the old Super Mario theme song). And there are Animals Crossing micro-games (fishing -- it's awesome with the Wii, because you actually move your hand the way you would if you were pulling on a fishing pole). They're silly, you can't help but laugh, and you can't help but want to do the next game.
The Wii comes with a selection of games, and there are a few other games out as well. My son loves "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," even if Link IS right-handed in it, but we all love Wario Ware.
The thing about the Wii is that we bought it for my kids (10, 16 and 19), but I'm 51 and *I* think it's a scream. I could see myself spending hours a week playing with it. The problem I have with our other game systems (I think the Xbox is the only system we DON'T have... yeah, we're all total nerds) is that I want to play challenging games, but I didn't "grow up" using a game controller, so I don't have the button-mashing reflexes built into my DNA like my kids do. So I bought Colin McRae Rally and I crashed a lot -- even though I drive real rally cars and hardly EVER crash -- because I keep stopping to think "argh, which button do I push now???" and next thing you know I've smacked into a tree. (On the other hand, since Colin McRae's nickname is Colin McCrash, maybe I AM playing it right. :-)
The Wii is so natural, so much fun, so engaging, but best of all it's done with light-hearted humor and GOBS of creativity. The graphics are not as good as the PS3 or the Xbox, but the game play is so much fun and so much more SATISFYING, even to an old far--er, coot like me.
For people of my generation, the Wii is to the standard video-game-console world what the original Macintosh was to the command-line based world of DOS and CP/M back in 1983. (You may not believe this, you might not even understand it, but once upon a time all computers had black screens with green dot letters and you had to type all your commands, and you had to LEARN what those commands were because they... oh, never mind. :-)

Well if your friends didn't have fun, then they must be pretty boring people. The Wii is a barrel of fun, and more! The huge variety of games, from hardcore such as Call of Duty and Trauma Center, to family-friendly like WarioWare and Rayman, to sports-centered such as Madden and Need for Speed, the Wii has all that I need to have fun. I know, I sound like a commercial, but the Wii is my dream system. With Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Metroid Prime 3 coming out soon, plus Guitar Hero 3, the Wii has a lot of potential. Throw in the Virtual Console and the other channels, and the Wii is one heckuva system. I love mine, and everyone I know loves theirs, so I suggest you get one.

I have had a Wii for a few months and I can say truthfully that it is tremendous fun. The games I play the most on it are Wii Sports, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Zelda: Twilight Princess. I also have Elebits, Excite Truck and Madden football, all of which are also good. I don't have one game that I consider bad.
I also have an XBox 360 and most older systems, and the Wii is the most fun.
