it takes 5 judges to decide who will win a beauty pagent, but only one judge to decide to let a child molester off with a light sentance?

Perhaps it is....but that is our (so called) judicial system. If I am correct at least, known to me, the State of Maryland passed a law afew years ago regarding sex offenders, especially targeted at child molesters, that law states that when release at any point is considered, that includes doing everyday of the sentence not merely parole, that a board of psychiatrist must find that they are not a threat to the public, and no release other than that OK...if found not fit then they are civilly committed indeterminably until found safe. This is at least a step in the right direction.

Actually you are wrong. Its 12 jurors that convict the child molester and in most states are allowed to pick the punishment.
The judge is no more than a referee.
