I have a couple of italian bills from a family members trip and would like to see if they are valid before I look into exchanging them.

This is a link with all the bills issued in Italy during the period of Italian Lira.

However I guess it's only for you to know since all of them are no longer current and just the last emissions can still be exchanged just and exclusively at Bank of Italy.
If you instead have the new currency bills (Euro) they are still current and can be exchanged everywhere.
Here's the link for yr checking

Italian currency is Euro, bills are the same on all Euro area (while coins shows one side different for every Nation, although anyway you can spend every Euro coin in every Euro area Country, that differce's just for "artistic/cultural" purpose); exchange of only latest lira (see link below for images) is still possible but only in Banca d'Italia, Italian central bank (not anymore in other Italian banks).

Italy has been on the Euro for a number of years now. Those old Italian Lire are worthless now, except as souvenirs.
