The Supreme Court is simply part of the evolution of the American form of government from the paternal (maternal?) British style.
The separation of the purely practical legislative duties of the ruling body into a Congress, and the more abstract task of defining and interpreting law into a Supreme Court is one of the things that has allowed the American government to flourish.
Won't it be interesting to see what the next culture that rises out of (and hopefully not from the ashes of) the American culture learns from our example?

Checks and balances are required for democratic countries.Parliament eventhough is supreme the laws passed by it are under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court. It has the power to interpret the constitution and review the laws made by the parliament through judicial review. It is good that they are not at loggerheads!
