i have been asked to build a garden wall.The problem is it runs close to services near the road.These services are electric and street lights.i need to excavate for the footings but am unsure who i need too contact prior to doing so

Its called.....Call Before You Dig. For free they will tell you where all water lines, gas lines, etc are. If you cant find the number in your local phone book call your engineering dept. at the courthouse. I work for our local engineering dept and we provide this service. Better safe than sorry. m

it depends how deep you are excavating. all services should be 18 inches minimum. that should more than enough for a garden wall footing. if you go through a main and it wasnt 18 inches then its down to the particular service you went through to pay for the repair.

call your power, water suppliers and they will mark out the exact location of the services. dont do anything until they have done this as it will cost you a ortune if you cut through one of the cables. let alone put your life in danger

Contact the City, the Hydro and Gas companies . These people can tell you what you have to do and whom else you might have to contact.

In Wisconsin, it is Diggers Hotline. Call your power provider. They should come out and mark lines for you.
