AVG and AVAST AntiVirus programs are excellent free programs. Either one can be downloaded easily at filehippo.

AOL has an excellent free AV protection. No membership required. This uses Kaspersky which is the best AV program available. In independent tests it detects and removes 99+% of the test viruses. The next best program is Nortons with a 93% detection and 87% removal. AVG is at 83% detection and removal.

Most free AntiSpyware programs are "On Demand" scanners. There are a few free programs that provide full time active protection.

Window Defender is an excellent AS program. Do not be fooled by the "we hate everything Microsoft" crowd. Windows Defender is also automatically updated through Microsoft/Windows Updates.

Spybot Search and Destroy has been around for a few years, but has been recently updated with a new search enging (about twice as fast), Tea Timer update. It is still an excellent AS program. The Tea Timer must be activated for it to provide full time protection. You can activate it during the download and initial setup. Spybot must still be manually updated, but thats a price you pay for a free program.

SpywareBlaster is an excellent program that monitors and blocks malware before it gets into your computer. This program also requires you to do manual update, unless, you make a donation. Then you will get the Autoupdate feature.

Any or all of the three AS programs can also be downloaded at filehippo.

You can download several other programs for On Demand scans. AdAware, AVG Antispyware, SuperAntispyware and other work great.
