When naming your child, the most important thing to remember is that they have to live with the name.
Make sure that the spelling is easy pronounce, sounds nice with the last name and that the initials don't spell anything embarassing. It also may be a good idea to ask any 8 year olds you know what kind nasty nickname it could be turned into. You may save your child from being teased when they are of school age.

Take a second to really think about boy's names for girls. People say it's trendy. Trendy means it is fiercely in style now, but will be OUT of style in a decade or so. Since a baby will have the name for a lifetime (80+ yrs), you don't want to use a name that will sound "2000's" and frumpy. I admit, boy's names for girls are cute. But up until what age? Are men's names on women that attractive? Imagine if you met a woman named David or Brandon..I doubt your first impression of her would be to think she had a beautiful name. You should really think about what you are doing to the child for the lifetime, not about what sounds cute in the now.
2ndly, If you are going to use a masculine name, choose one that is at least unisex. Evan is a hot name for boys right now! I think the girl would be made fun of and grow to resent her name. Emerson is unattractive because it has too many hard sounds in it, not to mention the fact that it's a last name. It sounds unattractive on a girl. Picture a 40 year old lady.. do you picture someone elegant or frumpy to be named Emerson? Even if you paired a girly middle name like Rose with it, it will do no good. How many people know what your middle name is? There are millions of names. Perhaps you can find one that is either unisex, or if it's a surname that it at least sound soft (ie Madison).

I LOVE boys names for girls... especially masculine sounding last names for girls (like Emerson). They go nicely with a more feminine middle name, or even a more feminine first name. For instance, my friend has a really gorgeous daughter named Charlotte Thomas who goes by "Tommie", and another friend is having a girl who she plans to name Evan Lily. Hope this helps!

There are some boy names that aren't too bad for girls names, but even Emerson isn't a very cute name for a boy. How about Avery?
Avery Grace?

You mean like Ashley, Courtney, Cameron and the like which were originally boys' names? I don't like them personally.
The two names you listed I would never guess those were girls. You could go with a distinctly feminine middle name.

My little boy's call is Lane, yet I constantly theory it sounded unusual as a women call. i think of the a number of unisex names are no longer solid, yet some are no longer so undesirable. Like Payton and Peyton or Taylor. yet i think of once you purposely take a boys call and make it a women call that's no longer outstanding or vice versa, as you mentioned, Ryan or Charlie(till Charlie/Charley is short for some thing like Charlotte or Charlene, then it extremely is basically a nickname).
