This is America! How is this allowed to continue?
Isn't there anyone in the government who can put a stop to this?

First, I don't accept your interprettation of the Patriot Act. You've been listening to way too many Libs.

Second, you tell me a better way to protect us from the terrorist threat than the Patriot Act and I'd be willing to listen. But I have NEVER heard anybody who is against it give a better solution.

I once wrote a paper on how the USA Today bungled the story on the NSAs wiretapping capabilities. She didn't like it.

As someone who has worked with NSA equipment, the story was ridiculous and the authors made idiots of themselves because they didn't take the time to get technical assistance.

The NSA is mandated to monitor "signal intelligence", meaning anything that passes through the air. The FBI and CIA are mandated to use all other surveillance for intelligence gathering. It is actually prohibited by executive order for the NSA to tap a phone line. If they want to, they're required to ask the FBI or CIA to do it for them.

A wiretap is an aligator clip or punch clip attached to a telephone punch block to capture the signal going through a wire. Wiretaps can't be used to capture "signal intelligence" unless you think you can hold them up in the air and get something!

Whenever you hear a "government conspiracy theory" to break into your personal business, you have to think about things like this. Do yourself a favor and just ask, "if they were to do it, how exactly would it work?"

Personally, I only know of one place where all of these technologies work: Hollywood.

It's been going on for decades. Wire tapping in war time is legal and both Reagan and Clinton did it in non war time also. Your mail is also legal in war time. They have to have suspicion you are consorting with the enemy to do it. The computer is just common knowledge but they are looking at flagged sites more than anything. Sites that have child porno or terrorist ties. The common ordinary citizen isn't going to attract their attention. And nobody can stop it.

When I was 12 years old as a student we saw a film on communsim and it described what ti was, it hurts to say but it was a description of our present day ideas from Washington on it's people. To continue in present day views to I'll do as I please until the majority changes hands to a different party is as evident to what I learned over 36 years ago. This administration as was with Nixons need to be made an example of by impeachment to them all, including V.P.No retirement, or any of the other accomidations that go along with ex-president. We as a fre nation of the people are insulted beyond imagination by the way this administration has presnted itself.

Ask the Democrats, more importantly President Roosevelt he established the precedent.

"......Armed guards and guard dogs watch over internees living in huts or dorms in barren parts of the country surrounded by barbed wire, observed from guard towers. All mail is censored. Contact with the outside world is severely limited. Many continually appeal their internment orders. DOJ generally ignores their requests, requiring unobtainable "new evidence" for consideration of appeals. ...."

They were doing these things before Bush made it to office. Go to your nearest post office tomorrow and ask them if they have the right to open and inspect any package you use them to send, and how long have they had this right?

As far as tapping phones and hacking computers. They did against organized crime. Why not against extremists? They are not listening to phone calls from St. Louis to Chicago, they are lsitening to phone calls from known terrorist tied countries to people in our country.

The wonders of the 10th Amendment and Bush's vaguely worded executive orders and signing statements could give the People a whole lot of powers we don't even know we have yet.

I say experiment, do stuff, and if caught say "Well Bush probably does it."

Hopefully, Rep. Henry Waxman will make good on his promise to investigate these attacks on our rights, starting with grilling Attorney General Gonzales.
