I just bought a really nice wooden cutting board to sit on my counter top. Now I am thinking that it maybe was wasted money, since I really did not need to have one to cut vegetables with. I am wanting anybody's opinion if it is really useful or unnecessary?

Also , can you wash it in the dishwasher safely? It just seems so clumsey .

A wood chopping board is nice for display, but not very practical or hygenic for chopping. Also if you put it in the dishwasher it will warp. Use a good quality nylon board for chopping meat which can be put in the dish washer and use the underside of the wood one for bread and such, then you can rinse clean and dry with kitchen towel. I then spray mine with an antibacterial spray and dry again with clean kitchen towel.

What are you planning on cutting food on, the counter top or on plates? Either case would damage your counter top or your knives. A wooden cutting board is very good, but do not wash in the dishwasher. Wash by hand with soap and water.

From someone who has no less than nine cutting boards of various kinds, my answer would be yes, they are necessary. And I'll be the first to say that's a little bit of overkill. Also, the plastic sheets are good to have around too. I use one cutting board for cutting up veggies and one for meat. I learned from Rachel Ray that the best way to clean a wooden cutting board is with a little bit of water and salt . . . don't put a wooden one in the dishwasher.

Firstly, using a cutting board to cut/chop food on will save your countertop from being damaged in the process. Also, you can clean a cutting board more easily than you can your countertop.

As most wooden cutting boards are made with several strips of wood glued together, your cutting board may warp or even come apart from repeated washing in a dishawasher, especially if the water temperature is elevated. However, it'll take lot of washing to do that and by that time, you'll have got your money's worth of the board.

Yes, it's very necessary to have several different types of cutting boards if you want to avoid cross contamination and Salmonella poisoning. I personally have a thick wooden one for meat and poultry, white for green vegetables and yellow for all other coloured veg. Also, I never store them next to each other too.
Yes, they wash fine and safely in a dishwasher if you have one and you have to, but I hand wash immediately with warm antibacterial soapy water.
Happy cooking!

i wouldn't say they are necessary but they are very handy. its not a good idea to put wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher because of too hot of water and mostly because the drying cycle will warp and ruin it eventually. plastic ones can be cleaned with steel wool. i learned from working at a caterer to use warm soapy water and a little bleach for cleaning and sterilizing. please remember to use separate cutting boards for cutting up veggies/ fruits and one for meats/ poultry .

I would wash it in the sink and yes a cutting board comes in handy for me anyway. You can get a small one. You may have a board that you roll out biscuits on or use to make other bread or cut out cookies. Roll out your own pie crust. If it is so big you could use it for that.

It's the best thing you can do to save your worktops from getting shredded. I'm glad you have wood because they are more hygenic than plastic and are self curing, in other words they help kill any bugs on it. Don't machine wash, it will ruin it, just wash under a hot running tap. I've had mine 25 years and won't part with it and best of all nobody has taken ill as a result of using it.
