Carrots cost:
0,5kg = 0,42
1,0 kg = 0,42 x 2 = 0,84
=> 12kg costs 12 x 0,84 = 10,08
Sprouts cost:
0,25kg (a quarter) = 16p
1,0 kg = 16p x 4 = 64p
=> 9Kg costs 9 x 64p = 576p
Total: 10,08 + 5,76 = 15,84

The problem should be broken into parts that you can do and then combine the answers to the pieces to get the total answer.

You know how much a half kilogram of carrots cost so you should determine how much a whole kilogram costs.

You know how many kilograms of carrots you need to purchase so multiplying the cost of a whole kilogram by the number of kilograms of carrots will tell you how much the carrots related portion of the total bill will be.

You know how much a quarter of a kilogram of sprouts costs so you should determine what a whole kilogram of sprouts costs.

You know how many kilograms of sprouts you need to purchase so multiplying the cost of a whole kilogram by the number of kilograms of sprouts will tell you how much the sprouts related portion of the total bill will be.

Adding the two costs together will give you the total cost.

I guess you also need to understand the number of pennies in a pound.

.42 per half x 2 = price per kg. Multiply that times the number of carrots.
16p per quarter x 4 = price per kg. Multiply that times the number of sprouts.
Add the two together and that's your answer... =-)

Okay:

12 x 2 = 24 x 0.42 + 9 x 4 = 36 x 0.16

So:

24 x 0.42 add 36 x 0.16 and you should get your answer. Which happens to be:

7.3728

Which is 7 pounds and 38 pence

How much do they each cost per kilo, given you know the cost of a half and a quarter kilo? That should simplify it a bit.

Mind you, 9kg of sprouts should come with a health warning.

If you go to Tescos, they work out at £15.84, but you can get a much better deal at Morrissons at £14.97.
However, if you buy the Carrots at Sainsbury's and the sprouts at a Costcutter, they will only cost you £13. 67p giving you a saving of £2.17p, so as you can tell.. there is no definite answer what with Asdas cutting costs daily

First find the price for the whole kilo

Carrots
0.42X2=0.84p per kilo
0.84X12=10.08

Sprouts:
0.16X4=64p Per Kilo
64X9=5.76

10.08+5.76=15.84
