Let me say first that I am very sorry and sympathetic to read your circumstances. I applaud you for sticking with school despite this adversity...this is extremely important. I'm not sure when you turn 18, but it will without doubt be much easier for you to enter into legal housing agreements, credit aplications, or contractual assignments of any kind. While legal emanicaption is possible, it is costly and by the time you were probably granted emanicaption, you would be 18 anyhow.

To best answer your question, it is important to know where you live, however you DO NOT want to disclose that on Yahoo. The reason I tell you this is because affordable or assisted housing is regulated not only by HUD regulations (federal level) but also coupled with state level management (DCA - Department of Community Affairs) and your local HAP office (Housing Assistance Payments). I have pasted the link for you below to search for the closest HAP administrators office to your location. The Section 8 program has historically been oversubscribed and waiting lists can run into the years. In fact, many housing authorities frequently close their waiting lists and stop accepting applications because the waiting lists are so long. To find out about wait times in your area coupled with whether or not you can immediately get onthe list, you need to contact the local HAP office for your area. I do know minors (under 18) with children are permitted to be on assisted living programs, but I cannot recall from memory if a 17 year-old with special circumstances such as yourself would qualify or not. I do know that in order for HUD to grant Section 8, a person must beof legal age as defined by the state by which the applicant resides.

While sorting through your options, it is important to remember that Section 8 is not your only option. You may also qualify for a Tenant-Based voucher which in my opinion is a little better only because it does not regulate where you have to live. More specifically, you can take your voucher and provided it is accepted, you can essentially rent anywhere. In this scenario, you could choose a location that is low-crime, higher income levels, and honestly, more amenities or privacy that a community serving only Section 8 participants. Does this make sense?

Good luck to you and please, contact your local HAP office immediately. In either instance, they will be able to give you specific information to your situation.

Keep your chin up.

okay in this state 17 you are of legal age to move out but the problem is to apply for section 8 the requirement age is 18 and must have at least one child. It will be hard to find apartment for yourself at 17 maybe with your mother signature. You do not need courts permission to leave mother's home..although it saddens me you have to leave home while still in school what parent would allow her child to leave home while still attending school sorry but had to voice my say on that you sound like a smart person to me with a good on your shoulder. good luck and be strong

You should go to the court house and file for an emancipation if you want to do it legally. Legally, you aren't allowed to enter into any binding contract under the age of 18 (e.g. housing agreements).

Don't you have any friends to stay with? I got kicked out at 17 and stayed with my friends family (I had a part time job to pay them for food and such).... until six months later when my mother admitted she overreacted and invited me back.

shut the ***** up. if you plan on being a freeloader to the system don't tell the government your age. let them make the mistake and think you are over 18. eventually they will catch it but you live cheap for a year. can't sign a binding contract if you are a minor.
