It's partly due to our make up of being a human like somebody else answered the body sends out these smells as a way of attracting others who may be sexually interested in us.
It also has something to do with conditioning, you get used to certain things. Like when you are a kid you might now like certain foods very much but as you get older and keep eating the same foods over and over again you start to like them you start to want them, you start to crave them when you don't get them.
Also if you smell a certain smell when you are doing a certain activity you start to relate that activity to that smell so the smell starts to have mean to you. If the activity is something you really like, really enjoy then when you smell that smell you think of the activity that goes with it for you and it make you happy because you are thinking about something you like, something that makes you happy!
For me it is not the scents of the opposite gender that arouse me it is the smells of the same sex that turn me on because I am gay!
It is strange to me how many people write question in the gay forum that are so blatantly heterosexual.
Oh well.
*hugs*

Hmm, I suppose that just depends on the person. For myself I find the greater majority of Cologne to be a turn-off especially women's perfume(not to mention the one's that some wear that you can smell them 20 feet away, why someone would want to marinate themselves in that junk I'll never understand) which tends to make my eyes burn and throat close up.
There are these things called pheromones that are found in the sweat of humans which are sexual attractants, some may be more sensitive to them than others.
