You can play without reading music - but if you want to be a quality musician that can adapt to numerous situations, especially for electric guitar, which also plays lead and counter melodies not just chords, you'll want to bite the bullet and learn not only how to read music, but learn theory, too. The more you know and understand, the more versatile and useful you will be.
Just take it slow, learn your chords and their corresponding notes. Pay attention to how chords progress in the charts you learn. You can still learn online, but make sure you find a program that works for you and stick with it. Jumping around will only confuse you. Professional musicians give years and years of our lives to study. I'd advise you to do it right and not take shortcuts that will only haunt you later.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure tab is more often used. The notes aren't quite as helpful because there are at least 12 of each note on the neck, and that's not to mention the sharps. You can study a chart online of the fretboard and the notes. But it's really pretty simple. Each note is a full step up from the one before it, which means that it's two frets up the neck, except between the B and C notes and the E and F notes, when it's only a half step (one fret). So, for example, the notes down the low E string are: open: E 1: F 2: F# 3: G 4: G# 5: A 6: A# 7: B 8: C 9: C# 10: D 11: D# 12: E 13: F etc., etc. Good luck. =]]

Well what do you mean by notes. If you mean do you need to know how to read music. It’s not required but if you have time to learn it that’d be good to do. But you definitely need to learn how the musical scale works and what keys are and how chords are constructed. Unless you want to be a no talented idiot that plays power chords all day. Maybe think about getting lessons or get a few books or look on the internet whatever but learn the scales and where every note is on your guitar. Remember practice practice practice and don’t let your ego get in the way always start with the basics without jumping into something advanced.

Not necessarily I've been playing the electric guitar for almost a year now and can't read notes. I just use tabs, so no you don't have to know how to read notes but it would be a good idea.

You dont realy need to know how to read notes. Just play around with your guitar every day and listen to the songs you want to play and try to duplicate that on your guitar keep trying and youll get it. you can learn the basic chords real easy and strum some realy cool tunes you make up. Just keep trying and dont give up, It'll get frustrating sometimes (trust me) but dont get discouraged. look up some chords and practice finger movements day after day. If your serious about playing then I suggest lessons or gettin together with a friend. Friends ae real cool about it, and if they love guitars theyll be more than happy to help you along they way.

you dont HAVE to be able to read notes but it really does help. maybe before taking up electric you should take some acoustic leassons and learn to read music it really isnt that hard and as soon as you learn it it sticks with you forever. but yea for right now tabs and everything is great but eventually you're gunna want to solo or play things just by hearing them and that you might want to learn notes for. have fun with it.

No you can use tablature. It tells you finger placement on the strings. My husband took guitar lessons for 5 years and still uses tab to rock out to hard jams as well as strum along to acoustic classics.
