As a teacher of American History for twenty- one years I can tell you the best paper I ever read during Black History month was by a black student who set out to determine which black inventions were actually invented by blacks and which were actually invented by OTHERS who were non-black. Her paper was fascinating. She found evidence that the street light, blood plasma, peanut butter and other things commonly attributed to black inventors were NOT invented originally by blacks at all. She had a suspicision that many of these inventions were simply innovations on existing inventions that had been created by non-blacks and she was right on a startling number of her choices. Of course this will not win you many black friends that like to simply recite the old lines of other blacks but it will make you an original thinker and a seeker of truth rather than a spreader of false traditions.

Good luck.

You could try Black history in other countries or Black history in South/Central American countries and how they are similar or how they influenced each other. Thats what I do because I have Black and Black Latino in my blood and it's fun to do the similaraties, I also did it in spanish class in high school.
