Instead of saying, "I pledge allegiance to the flag ...", should it instead perhaps say, "I pledge allegiance to the people ..."?

Nowadays, a lot of folks seemed pretty confused and seem to mistakenly believe they need to pledge allegiance to the White House and not their communities ...

Would it not make more sense for Americans to pledge to stick together and stand up for one another than to pit Americans against one another over silly and often corrupt international politics?

I'm not referring to any reference to "God" in this question - just the flag. Does the flag stand for the people or for the White House?

Yes, it should be re-worded to it's original form. The Pledge was written by a Christian, but the phrase "under God" was NOT part of it. This was inserted by meddling politicians during the McCarthy era when the US was concerned that the evil Godless Russians were going to overtake our way of life.

Incidentally, the person reciting the pledge is stating their allegiance to the flag AND the Republic, which is "of, by, and for the people," so the sentiment you want is already there.

Yes that does make much more sense but instead of trying to bring this country together Bush & Co. continue to try and pit us against each other based on whether we follow them or their party. More and more conservatives are seeing through this facade and hopefully it's going to come back to working together for the good of the country not just a chosen few.

Very well put! you get a star. I feel alot of things to be changed to fit the times and the maturity of this nation, things like permmiting the elected officials like Bush talk to us like imbosiles. The whithe house is to often like wagon wheels on the space shuttle.

Alot of people that say that we should change it are most likely democrats. I am a democrat, if anything. But what I think you should do is to try & clear your thoughts & opinions on this is to research our American History back when it was Tory vs. Whig / Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists. It'll clear alot up =]

The "flag" refers to the American people and our ideals.

If that is the case, then do we need a separate "Allegiance, faithfulness or duty” for separate situations, the citizens, the alliance., the land!????

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Pledge - it is the citizens of the republic for which it stands that could use some reworking.

We can't just go changing thing at will!!

Education needs to be the order of the day!
To keep tearing things away from their original intent to meet a changing society is EXACTLY why we suffer under a corrupt administration now!

By education I am not referring to book learning or "institutional" learning! You don't need to have a Ph.D. to be educated!

Better leave it alone. If we change it, pretty soon every kook group in the country will want to change it too. I don't know about you, but I'm not up for that!
