The shore of the Dead Sea is the lowest point on land (and constant receding), and people live quite close to it. Jericho is near the Dead Sea and, at 853 feet below sea level, is considered the lowest town in the world. Jericho is also famous for being the oldest continually inhabited settlement on Earth.
