Maybe you just didn't dig deep enough. The overall mood of the book "Holes" is a bit somber and gritty. Pay attention to when the main character is describing the romance of Onion John. Or when he saves his companion. It's the altruism , the thinking of other peoples problems, and thereby teaching himself valuable life lessons that shifts the "mood."
