Last week in Madrid, Osasuna were shown 4 red cards, leaving them with only 7 players on the field... is this possible in england? I seem to remember neill warnock encouraging sheffield utd. to get a fourth player sent off in order to get the game abandoned??

Niel Warnock didn't encourage a player to get sent off in the game concerned he actually encouraged a player to come off injured.

According to the International FA Board (the regulators of the laws of the game):

Subject to the overriding conditions of Law 3, the minimum number of players in a team is left to the discretion of member associations. The Board is of the opinion, however, that a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team.

I'm not aware that Spain have a different ruling so if Osasuna had received a fifth red card then the match would have been abandoned.

The Sheffield United match you refer to was abandoned after 82 minutes when Sheffield United had received 3 red cards and 2 players had left injured thereby leaving them with six men. The match score stood at 3-0 to West Brom with Sheff Utd fined £10,000.

The current Laws of the Game state that a normal, 11-a-side game of football can be played with a minimum of 7 players on each team. Thus, in practise, a team can have no more than 4 players dismissed from the field of play.

This is also applicable where, say 4 players have been dismissed, all substitutions have been used and a player is unable to continue due to injury. If he then is forced to leave the field of play, an abandonment occurs, due to the team having insufficient players to continue (6).
