What is it called when an advocate for a cause ends up turning people off to his message based on his extremenous? In other words, when his vehemence actually has the opposite effect of what he intends?

I know the affect you mean, not too sure of the name though.

I guess it is when people see someone who is so passionate that they start to seem dangerous/out of control

When compared to a moderate speaker the crowd would side with the less threatening person.

Also, another aspect could be the speaker criticising the audience for not sharing his fanatacism, thereby turning them against him.

when u know what u know your put out to the pastures here because it causes conflicts with the self interest of self interests-as long as your playing stupid you are happy & welcome to stay but when u c both ends playing against the middle u have been around too long-it is not a phenomenon it is lock~step~methodologies of big brothers way or don't let the door hit u in the @ss on the way out- we were working on building an america inside america when we were toppled in the sixties revolt of oppressions
