It happened long ago as 1960s when Raj Kapoor went to Switzerland for Sangam. Then there were several followers someone took you to Tokyo (Love in Tokyo), Johar Mehmud in HongKong, An Evening in Paris etc. Then it cooled down. It restarted with the Chopras again in DDLJ because of the story's demand. But Mr. Ghai and other just followed them blindly, with Pardes. Externally the idea is that common people cannot afford to visit these developed countries so they come to watch the film for an "overseas touring experience". But if we analyse it's just stupid gregariousness that producers follow. One person gets a hit doing something and then others just blindly go after it, saying "this is working". You try to tell them the fact or something fresh they throw you out. Its not limited to locales but you can find it with everything like, item numbers, exposing a heroine, car/bike chases, supernaturals. Anything stupid when it works the copycats follow. You must have watched recently all films have a number when the film ends. Because it worked in Dhoom the fools think it will work always.
We lack visionaries and creative people in the film industry and that is why sometimes the films become mockery.
One part of your question I did not answer why dance in front of the crowd. Abroad, you can treat people like commodities so you cannot thrash them away as you can do in India. You have to allow them. They watch the monkey business for amusement and we need that location so can't help. It also proves that the film is really shot abroad and not in a studio. How pathetic but it is the reality.

Nowadays i am sure it comes right down to creation expenses. There is quite a lot of world large talent with the intention to dance for much less. If it isn't an Indian period piece blue-eyed blonde dancers can substitute fine for the usual Hindi dancers. Call it revolutionary when it comes to allowing international dancers into the Bollywood industry. Additionally, many Hindi films at the present time are shot in every single place the sector. In fact, Dhoom 3 was once shot in Chicago, Illinois so dancers of extraordinary colour would not be out of position.

there is a logic behind the whole foreign thing- it give them the dual benefit of showing a different location then homeland and also the director always is able to get an actors chunk dates and complete attention if they go and shoot out on an outside location. this sometimes turns out to be more economical in the long run.

It seems as though foreign locations will entice you to watch the movie. Some people are contempt with seeing these locations on screen. I think its a waste of money, home grown gets more home support, like Amir Khan's Lagaan.

earlier they used these tactics to lure the audiance who will come in to watch foreign locations as not lot many indians used to get chance to visit abroad.
Now situation has changed and many Indians visit abroad and are well travelled in India , movie makers use foreign locations to keep the movie trendy and look new.

That's been going on for ages! I've seen movies that are 10/15 years old and they are doing the same thing. It's supposed to be exotic and add interest to the film.

I don't get tht myself. I mean in the old dayz they used to shoot the movie in their own country but now they have to take them to a thousand different locations just to shoot one scene. I don't see any point to it.
