Yes, definitely the tiger. They just seem so much deadlier. And I checked it out (see below) and most sources seem to come to the conclusion that a tiger would always win.

I'd put money on the tiger! Bigger than the lion and a loner so more used to fighting one on one! A male lion rarely fights and are very lazy animals! Even if both were females I'd still bet on the tiger!

I am in a unique position to answer this because I often arrange "inter-species" events of the type you describe.
Most of the big betting money usually goes on the tiger, for some reason.
It's never clear cut though; Sometimes the lion wins, sometimes the tiger.

Lions and tigers could meet in real life because although there are no tigers in Africa there are lions in India. Lions and tigers hunt in different terrain and hunt differently so it is unlikely they would compete in the wild.

These cats are members of the same genus "Panthera;" however, they are definitely different species. They live on different continents and would never meet in the wild. If they were purposely put together to fight, the outcome would certainly depend on the physical strength, sex, and age of the two animals; however, tigers have the size advantage. Tigers are the largest member of the family felidae.

I'm surprised that so many people are saying a lion.
Disregarding the unlikely chance they'd meet (you don't get tigers in African despite what one person said) and the questionable ethics of making them battle, the fact is the Siberian tiger is the largest cat in the world.
Seems like your childhood belief was right.

Although the tiger is bigger I'd say lion, due to the fact that it has a thick mane that would be difficult to bite through, the tiger has no such protection. Cats always go for the neck/throat to make a kill.

Alright, I was checking your profile, cause I didn't know if you were checking mine and came across this question. It's funny because I have always wondered if a bear and lion got on who would win? And also have questioned the outcome of a fight between Bush and Cheney, but that's on a different note. I'd have to disagree with you and say Lion. I agree with the guy who said gang warfare. Though one on one, they both seem to match each other. I guess whom ever was in better shape, you know laying off all that meat, or perhaps putting it on for mass?

The lion. Gang warfare.
One on one, the much larger tiger would whip the lion.
