i just bought a two bedroom cottage $30,000. Needs a great deal of updating, new furnace, a/c, roof, windows. Kitchen is I would guess from the 40's or earlier. Cabinet doors are thin with the edges rounded off. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

how about putting some wood molding on them, so it would look like a raised panel door. Not on the edges but put like a box shape on the face to look almost like a box on top. Or go to a store a buy wood shapes like rosettes or longer- 3-6 inch and glue gun them on. Or wall paper them and put a molding frame around. If they look like a wood frame box take out the wood and put glass so you can see inside the cabinets. You could even just buy new doors. Just a few suggestions.

Buy new oak or ?? doors on ebay. There is a fellow in Indiana that makes doors to any size and he has like 5 different styles.

His pricing is like $10 a door or so. Look on there he has a website and order forms.

You could use Con-tact brand paper( I call it Sticky paper)it comes in a lot of different colors and patterns- I did a coffee table in it-black marble looking and it looks really nice-people think it is marble until they get up close to it! It cheap also and if you get tired of the look you can peel it off and start over!!Or put more on top of that!!Hope this gives you an idea anyways!
