I want a clean house I can have people over to, but I HATE cleaning. I do the dishes and cook, wash & dry the laundry (do not hang or fold clothes!) but thats about the extent. What are some ways to help me get over this? Yes, it is laziness.

You don't sound like a very grown up grownup. There are things about every facet of life that are not fun, it varies from person to person and for you it is cleaning. Every mature person has to face things they fear, things they dislike, people who rub them the wrong way...we have to suck some things up about an otherwise good situation, and just do them. In your case, you want a pretty home that is welcoming for others. It is a worthy goal, and while you are at it, how about making your home more enjoyable for yourself and your family? But these things don't just happen, you have to make them happen.

You can make something you don't enjoy more tolerable by doing it with someone else, or by making it as easy as possible, or by breaking down the task into a couple of minutes at a time. You can do anything for a couple minutes...and most home maintenance tasks don't require much more than that. There is also delegation, and if you are willing to do some of the jobs, particularly something that another family member doesn't like to do, then you have a bargaining chip for them helping you with things that are unpleasant for you. But to just dig your heels in while NO one takes care of the mess, and the family to refuse the tasks because they are not fun...well, they just keep getting worse.

Having poo-poo-ed a little at how juvenile your question sounds to me, I am not here to judge you because I think it is wise that you realize that you tend to be hard to motivate. That is one step toward solving the problem, and you can also work with your tendencies rather than having them work against you. You also may not be entirely lazy. You maybe working your butt off or dealing with an overwhelming situation that would be hard to motivate anyone to do.

Laziness, believe it or not, is one reason TO organize your home. It takes work and time in the beginning but you get it back 100 fold in the end, I promise. An organized house is easier to clean, easier to live in, and easier to manage. I find that when I am more organized, it is easier to do everything. You have time, energy, and resources left over to enjoy your life.

OK. Some tips for you in the area of making things easier.

Get rid of excess stuff. A good declutter makes everything else easier. Less to move when you clean, less to clean, less to organize and store, less to look at, less to work around trying to find the things you do use and love. So start with any method you choose that will clear some of the stuff out, make space, and help you think straight.

In your organizing plan, include catch all baskets in each living space so that out of place items can be carted around to where they go. And include plenty of wastebaskets, hampers, a good recycling system, and containers for surfaces and cabinets where small things are stored. Then when you clean, you just lift that thing up and dust around it, under it, and put it back.

In the beginning you may be doing a lot to one area. Clearing, cleaning, organizing, straightening, repairing, redecorating...and that is fine at first because it is logical if the house needs major attention in all these areas. When you get the space the way you want it, though, break up your tasks so you don't get overwhelmed and so you can squeeze them in between other things. If you are straightening, do that. If you are organizing, do that. If you are cleaning, do that. Then you don't find yourself always in the middle of something.

Make your cleaning supplies portable, carrying everything you need for a single area. Saves trips.

For everyday housework, devote about HALF your time to deep cleaning ONE area. Divide your house into zones for this purpose, and stay there until everything has gotten full attention, then move to another place. You will work your way through the house on a regular basis, and when you come to a month like December which is busy for most people, or July when you take your vacation, then don't do this part at all. But do it regularly. Your plan for these jobs might just be a list that you write down each room and what you want to accomplish when you leave there. You might also want to assign a time and a budget in this deep cleaning plan, for getting the house painted (in or out) or steam cleaning carpets, etc.

The other half of your daily work should be spent everywhere else in the house doing daily and once a week jobs that need frequent attention. Daily jobs may be making beds (everyone makes their own) gathering laundry (everyone delivers their own), spot check the bathrooms, run the dishwasher, do a load of laundry start to finish (everyone can pitch in) feed the animals, sweep the kitchen floor. Weekly jobs may be washing sheets, vacuuming carpets, mopping hard floors, groc shopping, checking bills to pay.

Once you are in a routine, you can do specific jobs quickly and put the tasks behind you. Enjoy the time left to show off your house by having guests.
