someone who is honest and who you can trust
someone who listens to you when you need to talk....someone who doesn't mind it when you blurt out random, meaningless things...someone who is always on your side....someone who will stay up with you all night when you're sad and will find a way to make you happy :-)
someone who is easy to talk to
someone who you like to be around...someone who can make you laugh...someone who can share their craziness with you
someone who you know best...and you know them better than anyone else
someone who shares your interests because you can talk about those types of things together...and if you both like to play violin or something like that then you can practice together and learn from eachother
someone who you will always be friends with no matter how far you are from each other even if you haven't seen them in years
true friends always stick with you and are one of the most important things to have in your life
there will only be one true friend

Someone who listens to what you have to say and never prejudges you, to whom you can tell literally every secret and know that they will never betray that confidence or laugh at you. A true friend is always there for you, and gives you a shoulder to cry on and helps you get through the roughest times of your life. They see you for who you really are, they encourage you, and they would die for you.
In a true friendship, you are both everything I have just described for one another, and nothing can break that friendship. You don't have fights with your true friend (or at least, not serious fights where you actually feel the urge to resort to violence) although you may bicker or argue over little things. Rumors cannot hurt your friendship, because you both know the truth and even though the rumors can hurt, they can't separate you. You find a way to talk with them, by phone, email, IM, or snail mail, and you're always there for each other. True friendship goes beyond death, and you know each other so intimately (mentally and spiritually) that you carry a piece of each other's souls within yourself.
I've read that the ancient Irish called their closest friend their "anam-chara", or soul-friend, which a true friend is. Everyone has multiple friendly acquiantances, friends, best friends, but they have only one person that is so close to them that they can call him or her a soul-friend. If you haven't met your soul-friend yet, you mustn't give up hope, because he or she is out there looking for you, too.
I don't know if this really answers your question the way you want it do, but it's what immediately comes to my mind when I am asked such a query.

A Friend is someone who knows all about you and loves you just the same!!! I believe that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change!! That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while, and you must forgive them for that!! That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love!!!! That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time!!

A true friend is someone who will be there for you in time of need, even if it is not convenient for them to do so. I am not talking about being there for a person who creates a crisis a week, but someone who has a genuine need.

A friend will listen to your rants, whines, and dreams and not judge.
A friend will let you know when you have a boogie hanging...quietly.
A friend will take your call at 2am and not be angry.
A friend will always tell you the truth, no matter what, but is tactful about it.

I have heard it said that a true friend is someone that knows all your faults, yet they are still your friend. In other words they accept you as you are.
