If you haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, you should. A wonderful book. Also The Red Pony and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck are classics.

Anything by Dickens or the Bronte sisters

I think historical fiction books are the best because you can learn history (which I have always hated) without trying to learn it. I don't hate history as much as I used to after reading a ton of historical fiction. Here are some suggestions.
Island of the Blue Dolphins by O'Dell
A Room of My Own by Tatlock
A Gown of Spanish Lace by Oke
The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck
A long Way from Chicago by Peck
The Blue Bottle Club by Stokes
Christy by Marshall

Here are some other suggestions. (not historical)
The Day of the Storm by Pilcher
The Locket by Evans
The Face on the Milk Carton by Cooney
Izzy, Willy, Nilly by Voight
Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood by Conford
Up a Road Slowly by Hunt
The Great Brain by Fitzgerald
Marley and Me by Grogan
Emily EVer After by Dayton

The Singer's Crown by Elaine Isaak, it's a great book filled with excitement, magic and a tiny bit of romance. It's beautifully written, I fell in love with it almost immediately, I know you'll love it too. And don't forget the trilogy Lord of the Ring by J. R. Tolkein, a must reader.
