I recommend East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's at 600 pages and covers so much: love, hate, marriage, the story of Adam and Eve, free will, what it means to be a human being, fate, destiny, family...the list goes on and on. It's a book you'll read over and over again.

Anything by Terry Pratchet. He uses a fictional world called Discworld to comment human nature and issues in our own world (war, racism, love, religion etc.) and has created some of the most memorable characters in english fiction.

It's satire, some of it dry humour, some of it laugh out loud humour.

If I had to pick one I'd suggest "Jingo", where he looks at issues like the (sometimes silly) reasons for which people go to war etc. Pretty topical.

The good thing about Pratchet is that he leaves some room for your own opinion, it doesn't feel like he shoving his opinions down your throat.

The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint by Brady Udall. One minute it's hilarious and the next it's achingly sad.

I would suggest East of Eden. It has about 600 pages and covers topics on just about everything -- love hate, etc.
