Three hurricanes during that time period that affected the US the most were Hugo in 1989, Gloria in 1985, and Celia in 1970, but there were others.

For a complete list of hurricanes that affected the United States: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/hurdat/ushurrlist.htm (and then just look at the 1970s and 1980s sections)

I'm still trying to locate something that lists all hurricanes, even those that did not affect the US, without going through individual pages for each season (like you can do from sites such as http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/index.html).

Hurricane Celia, Aug 1970 was one of the worst storms dollar wise to ever hit texas. Hurricane Frederic, 1979. In the 1980's there were Hurricanes Allen, 1980; Alicia, 1983; and Elena, 1985.
