I absolutely loved both of them. I always read the book before I watch the movie and LOTR was almost exactly how I imagined it to be. In fact, I've read the book 14 times and watched the trilogy countless times.
I liked the fact that the director followed the book and did not deviate (like harry potter) from it too much, cutting slightly insignificant scenes to fit into the 3hrs timing and putting those which still make some impact into the dvd extended version.
When I watched the movie, I saw the scenes that I've pictured in my mind when reading the book on the silver screen. The battles were epic and the scenery picturesque. The actors and actresses portrayed their characters convincingly and practically flawlessly.
The plot of the entire book itself was simply fantastic and magical. It sucks you in. As I followed the fellowship on their mission, I saw the beautiful trees of Lothlorien, I felt the ring's influence over Frodo, I could feel Gandalf's immense power radiating from him, I could see the elegance, grace and power of Legolas.... J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the very best fantasy authors I have ever come across. His descriptions of places and events are so detailed that you'd actually feel as if you were the one seeing those things.
I'm an LOTR nut and I'm proud of it :D

I generally like books better than movies, and LOTR is a case in point. The books are very complex, with a lot of stuff going on in and around the main plot line; and although he tried, Jackson could not possibly put all that on screen.
I do have to give him kudos for one thing, though--that confrontation with the King of the Shadow Host in the movie "Return of the King" was awesome, even if it wasn't in the book. I think Tolkien would definitely have approved.

I was a little disappointed with some parts of the movie, especially when major parts were left out (Battle for the Shire). I didn't care for Liv Tyler's character having such a big role (didn't happen in the books).
I enjoyed seeing the movies but liked the books better.

Almost sheer perfection. The books kind of drag, here and there, but the story itself is fantastic. The movies, they stayed pretty true to the books, and brought them to life in epic ways.
I can see the movies becoming classic, like the books are.

I liked them both. The books did get kind of tedious after a while but there is 4 of them and Tolkien is really descriptive, almost too descriptive sometimes.
