Since I just turned 40 this past September...I will tell you.
I've made too many mistakes along the way, have payed dearly for them and continue to pay for some of those mistakes to this day.
You only get one shot at life...and when I looked back at what I've accomplished, and what I thought I would have accomplished...it caused me a good deal of grief.
We're all on borrowed time, and sometimes on our special day, we just don't feel at that special at all.

Maybe thay expect that it will be better than it really is and people will be nicer and more good things will happen. Or sometimes on my birthday I think back on the past year and I can't remember anything that was really amazing and it makes me sad to think that the years are just going by so fast and I haven't really done anything.

Because you realize you are another day older and with that not only comes the acknowledgement of a death and numbered days but also your body and mind's half life. With each growing year your body grows more tired, worn, and your mind dulls untill you are no longer able to take care of yourself and you die just as you were born, ignorant and helpless; making your whole life seem so meaningless.
P.S. It's My Mommys Birthday Too! ^^;;

Some people don't like the idea of getting older, as it usually implies more responsibilities and getting closer to death.
As for me, my bday feels rather blase. I really don't see how it's any more special than any other day. Besides the cake, which I end up having to eat all of it because everyone else is worried about getting fat. And they wonder why I'm the fat one...grr...

Birthdays usually make people acknowledge where they are in life. Are you working where you want to be working? Are you in love? Have you done things you've always wanted to do? Do you like your friends?
You're getting older, but are you proud of what you've accomplished?
Do you look your age?
I've stopped worrying about it and have become grateful that I look, act and feel a lot younger than my age.

I am not quite sure. My 30th birthday was depressing while my 40th was a joyful event. Maybe we pay to much attention to peoples negative input regarding aging.

Because they think they are supposed to feel good, or they have other expectations about the day that are not realized.
