some lineages change vary little over time, ex: living fossils. what ecological conditions might result in this sort of long term evolutionary status?

Stable ecological conditions would result in that sort of long term evolutionary status. Evolution happens because the organism must adapt to the changing environment to survive. If it doesn't, it dies. For those living fossils, they were just fine in their environment back then with little or no predators or other factors to inhibit their reproduction. Even today, a stable environment with little or no predators or environmental factors to inhibit their production of offspring has led them to stay relatively the same. Kind of like, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Hope this helps :D

This is such a huge topic ,
i believe creatures that remain undisturbed
in their own ideal environment ,
can remain very much, the same for a very long period of time .

Interference of that ideal state,
ie. by climate change ,or invasion of other species etc.;
and the creatures will need to adapt ( ie change) to survive

I hope that helps somewhat ;
