Well why not do it with color standards? You can make a range of pieces of paper. One piece has a slightly darker color brown than the next. You can hold the pieces next to the apple an make a judgment as to which color best matches. Then based on the position in the color sequence you can make a statement about how your samples relate to each other.

If you want an easy way to get these little colors standards ready made and free of charge, head on down to the paint section of your local hardware store.
