WOW, ok I'm glad you asked this before you made a mistake. The x1300 is a crap vid card. The 7900GS is really a great card. the amount and type of RAM is not the only thing that matters but how fast the graphics processors and that 256MB RAM run at, bandwidth size, pixel pipelines and available options. If you're looking at just the boxes at a local store you most likely won't get al that info. I would suggest looking on http://www.newegg.com/ I can almost guarantee that the X1300 is cheaper though. it really depends on what you wanna do with the new card, but since the question was "which is better" the 7900GS is WAY WAY WAY better. If you aren't worried about games, then get the X1300 otherwise get the 7900GS or evena 7600GT. If I haven't convinced you yet then check out http://www.gpureview.com/ for comparisons. here's the two you listed: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=443&card2=328

Without knowing more about your system it's difficult to reccomend one or the other, from the information I was able to find they use different interfaces to the motherboad.

The ATI is available as AGP 8x, and PCIe 16x
The nVidia is only available for PCIe, but their website doesn't say if it's 1x, 16x or something in between.

What's the motherboard you're planning to use it with? Or are you picking the video first and getting a MB to match it? (A perfectly fine approach to system building)

The only other thing I can say is if price is an object the nVidea is nearly twice the price of the ATI board, but also from what I saw it outperforms the ATI board by a significant margin.

They are probably both good. I not want to miss lead you to think one better, but, nVidia is the big player now in this area. When buying a motherborad I try to get the ones with the nVidia North Bridge. I feel more confident in their ability.
