Perception is the only truth we know. Whatever we see and percept, we believe. Every human has its own believe. There is no real truth in life based on certain well defined rules. Reality is that even the truth is percepted. And if you come across something that is against your believes you deny and resist it by saying that it is not truth but how do you know whether what you are saying is really the truth or not. Just because you percepted and believed, it became the truth. Is it the only criteria for something to be true? No it is not.
That is why perception is important because it protect your lies or believes (whatever you say it). If you ever come across the reality, you'll not be able to survive because you'll know at that time that your whole life was nothing else but a big lie. You lived your whole life in protecting those lies. Thus, to live you need an abstraction which is ultimately your perseption.

Perception is the way you take things in. How you analyze and use what you have analyzed. Without perception there would probably be more problems in todays world, because no one would be able to take things in and analyze to attempt to solve.

Different approach.

Perception is what changes "Are you going to wear those pants?"
into "I hate those pants."
"you made a mistake." into "you're stupid."

It is not funny. It can ruin a relationship in a New York heartbeat.
