You should also be familiar about the time you're going to use. If you are going to play a game in Medieval time, you should study about the people's behaviors of the time. For example, in Middle Age, you can't see lots of people in the streets after sun goes down. These details will help you throughout the game.

You should pay lots of attention to describing, because you will be the one who's going to make your players imagine the world they are in. Soo, study a lot on the time and environment, watch lots of movies, read books or articles about the time and try to have fun in the game. If you're going to spend 7-8 hours in the game, it better be fun, isn't it? Feel free to twist the rules so that you enjoy the game. Remember, they are here just to help you, not to bind you.

read a lot of fantasy novels. Get very familiar with the D&D forgotten realms world. It is the best example of a rich RPG world, and a rich character creation system. A good rpg offers endless ways to customize and enhance your character's abilities throughout the game. Diablo II has the best to offer in developing a character from pitiful to godly.

Also try to mix it up between straight fighting and puzzle solving. I have played in many games that are nothing but combat and it gets boring quickly. Most games have alot of different skills that do not get used. Try to encourage players to use them and make sure that in your story they will get a chance to use them. Players with uniwue skills will feel useful if they have a solution to a problem.
