I currently live in a suburb of Detroit, Mi called Farmington Hills, Mi. The community is very diverse and culturally stimulating. I have also lived in Southfield, Mi which is also very diverse & culturally stimulating. I would like some info from people who have relocated from the Southfield, Farmington, Farmington Hills or West Bloomfield,Michigan area to Arizona. Who could tell me where are there nice suburbs to live in the Arizona area Phoenix, Mesa, Lake Havasu - any other suggestions??? Not over the top expensive but nice, quiet, safe suburban neighborhoods - family oriented & friendly. I would like to rent a house. Is rental housing very expensive in the suburbs? Also any other advice on moving to Arizona & living there? I do not know anyone living there so I will be going it alone. Also are there any groups or clubs from former Michiganders who have relocated to Arizona where you can meet & socialize with while I make new friends in Arizona. THANKS, REGINA :)

i moved from ann arbor to tempe about two years ago. housing costs are rising pretty quickly here, but i don't know what your budget is - you can find decent housing for around $1200 a month in some of the burbs. if you pay less, you're going to be in crime-ridden neighborhoods, so scope out the places good before you head out. my place is a bit over $1200 & we've been having a few stolen cars in the area, so even in the better places it's getting bad. you want "culturally stimulating" in arizona? it's not going to happen. its pretty much all white & hispanic in most places with pockets of black neighborhoods. i've found arizona to be very segregated. it's funny, you can drive down a few blocks and see the people & know what city you are in. anyway, i'd say tempe has the closest thing to what you are looking for. they are a university town, so there is at least some diversity & they try to be cultural with their programs. as far as meeting other michiganders - well, i go out all the time in my red wings jersey & i'm always meeting others from michigan. i don't know of any groups, but in time you'll come across tons of us. sorry i sound so negative, it's just that i came from very liberal ann arbor to this bland conservative state & i'm not as happy with the lifestyle, but i DO love arizona for it's weather & the friends i've made.

Just so you know, Lake Havasu is not a suburb of Phoenix at all. It is at a completely different part of the state. The suburbs you refer to is what is called the "valley" out here, which is Phoenix and the surrounding area (its the valley because we are in a valley in between mountains). Its hard to say where you should live, but if you have a job, make sure you research how far, because the freeways suck and you'll think it's a lot closer than it is. The valley is very large so you don't want to live in east mesa and drive to surprise. Trust me, just make sure you know the locations, it will save you a lot of headaches.

only so that you recognize, Lake Havasu isn't a suburb of Phoenix in any respect. it is at a thoroughly diverse area of the state. The suburbs you search for advice from with is what's called the "valley" out right here, it is Phoenix and the encircling area (its the valley because we are in a valley in between mountains). Its complicated to assert the position you should stay, yet once you've a job, verify you study how a concepts, because the freeways suck and also you'll imagine it is plenty closer than it is. The valley is very tremendous so that you do not go with to stay in east mesa andchronic to wonder. believe me, only verify you recognize the places, it is going to ward off various of complications.

Chandler and Gilbert are very nice, family friendly places to live. There are affordable areas and more expensive areas...just check out real estate or apartment sites. Gilbert has one of the best school districts in the state. The southern part of Tempe and southern part of Mesa are nice too. There are a ton of Michiganders in Arizona...won't be long before you meet a bunch of them once you get here.Good luck!

How far outside Phoenix,, my suggestion would be Prescott, it is about less than 2 hrs - north of Phoenix,, the summer are not so hot and the winter have very little snow,, it's elevation is about 5k ft
Looking for former Michiganders,, maybe drop an ad your question on www.craigslist.org,, post in the Phoenix,AZ area,, under the general category, you might get some answers there too, plus you could seek some rental info there..

Why not live in Phoenix? No matter where you live here in the valley it will be a culture shock. We aren't anything like Michigan, We are the desert. You will love it here if you don't try and compare. I say live close to your job, it is really getting crowded here. Welcome to our fine state ( when you get here :) )
