Watching Swan Lake made me realise that men did not have zips at the front of their trousers. So I am just curious when they were inserted at the front of trousers.

according to Global encyclopedia zippers were invented by Witcomb L. Judson in 1893. In 1910 he developed the C-Curity Fastener for trousers and skirts.

It was the twentieth century, and fairly late on.However, before the zip was used buttons were used for the same purpose. I was born in 1942 and can well remember trousers with a buttoned fly, rather than a zip, well into the 1960s. I cannot now remember when zips became universally used. Trousers have always has some kind of opening in the front, Before the single fly there was a sort of flap with two rows of buttons. The guys in Swan Lake were wearing tights, not every day trousers!

As far as I can remember, the 20th C
During the last War,( 1939 to 1945) many men, airmen in particular, suffered serious burns when aircraft crashed in flames. An enterprising tailor ( I know not who ) came up with the idea of fitting zips to trousers to make it possible for men with missing or badly damaged fingers to do the necessary with their trousers it being impossible to open buttons with stumps.

In the last century (twentieth). There were no zips in the 1800's. They came in on trousers in the 1950's

I'm pretty sure it was during the reign of Queen Victoria around the time when she signed the papers banning homosexuality between males, it suddenly became a criminal offence! Prior to that 'zips' were fitted to the rear of mens trousers, for ease of access, this practice was immediatly stopped!!!

The zipper, as we know it, today, was invented by Gideon Sunback, a Swedish inventor. One of its first uses was on the trousers of American soldiers in WWI.
