look at the Seat61.com pages on Kenya and Zmbia/Tanzania for train travel...

But I think you may also need to travel part of the way by bus if you don't want to fly between the country's capitals

The easiset way will be to fly betrween the capitals (Nairobi and Dodoma) then go onward to Arusha by bus or train...

Happy Trails

Just out of interest are you going to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda which is in Arusha. I only ask as I myself have recently got back from Rwanda and would have loved the opportunity to have gone to Arusha so I'm planning to go back to Africa in a few months time.

As for getting from Nairobi to Arusha, you really need to get hold of one of two travel guides: Either the Lonely Planet's "Africa on a Shoestring" guide or the the recnet Lonely Planet Guide to East Africa which is invaluable for providing info on how to get from one country to another. Also go to www.lonelyplanet.com [thorn tree branch] which has comprehensive info from other travellers.

Ok if you want to get from Nairobi to Tanzania I have the following info from the Lonely Planet shoestring Guide:

1)The main border crosssing between Kenya and Tanzania is at Namanga. Daily tourist and shuttle buses run betwen Nairobi and Arusha [four hour journey] and there is no need to change buses at the border.

2) The minibus shuttle service is run by companies such as RIVERSIDE [Tel: Nairobi 020 229618] is popular but not cheap [foreigners are charged approximately $20 - $30 US but you should be able to get the residents rate of approximately $10 - $15 US if business is quiet].

3) Alternatively you can do the journey in stages: catch a matatu (minibus) from Nairobi to the border at Namaga, cross on foot or by bicycle taxi (it's about 1km between the Kenyan and Tanzanian border posts) and continue to Tanzania by dalla-dallal [pick up truck or minibus].

Most of the long distance bus stops in Nairobi are based on or around River Road.
Hope that helps!
