You can get two points for answering whether it's a correct answer or not. So I don't think someone is stupid for answering correctly whether they had to do research or not. Probably they aren't here for the points but just want to help.
As for why people ask stupid questions...I think it depends on the person. Some people have common sense and others don't. Some people want to get a reaction. Some do it for fun.
