My French teacher is originally from Belgium. The first Thanksgiving she spent in America, one of her English professors invited her over for Thanksgiving dinner and asked her to bring a casserole. In French, a 'casserole' is a stew pot. So, of course, she showed up to Thanksgiving dinner with an empty stew pot. Talk about a real culture shock! I laughed so hard when my teacher told me that story.
