Does a martyr have any real qualities? Who decides when someone is a martyr or not? Does simply dying for a cause/freedom/religious belief make someone a martyr? If so then there are millions of martyrs buried in battlefields all over the world. And one mans martyr is another mans enemy. History is almost exclusively written by the victors, who then make their own martyrs.

A martyr is someone who appears to give up everything, but only when you are looking. If you don`t see them "do it" they cannot be a martyr.

The only difference between martyrdom and suicide is press coverage, as sung by panic! at the disco. It depends on your point of view. A martyr is someone who is willing to die for a cause they believe in.

A martyr has to believe so strongly in their cause that they are prepared to and finally do die trying to further it. It used to be the case that their death is usually caused by someone who opposes them, however suicide bombers these days are often revered (I believe quite wrongly) as martyrs.
I believe that martyrdom is very wasteful. Someone who believes that strongly are better off alive trying to effect change, dead they just become a poster and and a rallying cause which eventually fades.

Depends if it's religious or fanatical.
If the deed is in the best interest of their fellow man, without expecting, or taking recognition or thanks for their action then that sounds good to me.
If it's just to further a violent cause in the name of their god then that is a waste of a life and those they take with them. That gets the big thumbs down for me

it's in the eye of the beholder.
Some consider suicide bombers to be martyrs, though generally not the children of their victims.

You could say bravery in their highlighting their cause or stupidity in throwing their life away for an ideal. Personally I think one should live on to fight the cause. Once you're dead, you're dead.
