y must equal 0 because 'xy' and 'yx' are the same thing. The only way the equation is true is y=0. X can be anything.

xy + y = yx

Multiplication is commutative; yx = xy, so

xy + y = xy

Subtract xy both sides,

y = 0

Therefore, the solution is
x = t (for some real number t)
y = 0
