Well depending how deep you want to go her are 3 sites which offer all the info for your time line and history, sorry but there is too much info to put on this page.

This is the US Navy diving manual which can be viewed online in pdf format . Volume 1 section 01 gives a great history of diving with drawings of early apparatus.

Personally I like the US Navy site for the info and pics.

Also you can go to the NOAA site and purchase the NOAA Diving Manual
Diving for Science and Technology, 4th Edition
its not cheap at $89 and the history part is mostly the same as the US Navy pdf ... which is free.
