some are, like elmjunburke made it clear, but some americans are gypsies as well. Should we call all americans gypsies as well then?

First thing, it is Rromani (and a few other spellings), not Gypsy. Gypsy is a blanket term that includes Rromani and a few others but, for the most part, Gypsy is associated with Rromanies. Many of us use both but the community is trying to get away from the word "Gyspy" because of certain problems associated with it.

You are correct. Rromani is a genetic ethnicity. Romanian is a nationality. Two different things.

For example: I am American. My parents were Romanian Rromani. That is, Rromani FROM Romania. So I am Rromani from America, first generation.

There are Rromani from all over the world. Romania does not have the patent on Rromani.

There were Gypsies on Bonanza? I watched one or two episodes and just the thought of Gypsies on Bonanza is a bit frightening.

All American know about gypies we got from the tv show Bonanza.
