You'll want to find the area of the entire rectangle(garden and walk). Draw a picture of a rectangle and label the sides 30, 20, 30, and 20, so that the 30's are opposite each other and the 20's are opposite each other. Now draw a bigger rectangle outside of that one you just drew. The lengths of the big rectangle are each 34 feet long, since you've added 2 feet to each side. Similarly, the widths are now 24 feet.

The area of the sidewalk is found by finding the area of the big rectangle and subtracting the area of the small rectangle

A(sidewalk) = A(big) - A(small)
A = (34 x 24) - (30 x 20)
A = 816 - 600
A = 216 sq ft

Another way to look at this would be to look at the walkway as 4 rectangles. The top and bottom pieces would each be 34 feet long by 2 feet wide. The left and right would then be 20 feet by 2 feet.

A(walk) = A(top) + A(bottom) + A(left) + A(right)
A = (34 x 2) + (34 x 2) + (20 x 2) + (20 x 2)
A = 68 + 68 + 40 + 40
A = 216 sq. ft.

2. The garden is 30 by 20, so the area is 30 x 20 = 600 sq. ft.

lets make the sides 2 rectangles that are 2'x30' each so they're 60 square ft. each

the two remaining rectangles are 24' by 2' each - right (2 extra feet on either side both top and bottom, becaude of the added width of the walk)? draw a picture.
