Historians generally agree the greatest president America has had was Lincoln. I agree whole-heartedly. JFK would not even rank in the top five in my opinion and many historians feel he would not have even won reelection in 1964. One comment above criticized Lincoln for invading a sovereign nation (the Confederacy.) This is wrong. No respected historians believe the South ever actually seceeded--the Constitution does NOT grant states the power to seceed. The South was like a runaway child that leaves home, dies their hair a different color, and changes their name. They look different and they answer to a different name, but they are still biologically, genetically linked to the their parents. And to criticize Lincoln for stretching the Constitution is ridiculous. The country had never seen a strain on the Constitution like that during the Civil War. The fact the Lincoln held the nation together at that time ranks among the greatest political accomplishments of world history. His character is above reproach, he devotion to his country cannot be questioned by educated scholars, and his commitment to preserving the Union is beyond serious debate.

I would rank Lincoln as among the five or ten greatest individuals ever born on earth.

FDR was also an important president and a great leader in time of strife, however I lay at his doorstep the current welfare mentality that plagues the nation today. He was the president that convinced citizens that the government owes them a living and a paycheck when times get tough. With that I whole-heartedly disagree.

Selecting the best President is difficult without defining a foundation within which to make such a determination. For me that is which one stayed closest to the Constitution.

JFK is not a good selection because he was not President long enough to do much, although the image he portrayed influenced many to do great things.

FDR entered office with many existing problems, however, he took credit for many ideas offered by Herbert Hoover. Even his fireside chats were actually started by Lou Henry Hoover. He was likely the right man for the presidency to fight WW II, but he moved the country far down the road toward socialism.

Lincoln was a great man but from the perspective of the Constitution was a terrible president. His Civil War wasn’t a civil war at all, rather, it was an invasion of the sovereign country of the Confederacy by federal forces of the Union. By the end of this war the States (North as well as South) had been relegated to underlings of the federal government. This became very apparent at the end of the war when [1868] the 14th Amendment was enacted without meeting Constitutional requirements for ratification. Then in 1869 this was justified by the federal Supreme Court (in Texas v. White) by the opinion that the federal government could do so by right of conquest.

The best President since WW II has been Truman closely followed by Ford. At the bottom of the post WW II scale would be LBJ who moved the country deeper into socialism, carter and clinton.

Before WW II the best President is the obvious one, Washington. He turned down the offer of being king and walked away from the presidency after two terms. Both President Madison and President Jefferson would be close to Washington.

Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the US...principal author of the Declaration of Independence...responsible for Louisiana Purchase & Lewis & Clark expeditions...promoted ideals of Republicanism & separation of church & state. In 1962, JFK welcomed 49 Nobel Prize winners to the White House. He said, "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent and human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

Lincoln was not a great president - and he was not an abolitionist, either. Everyone assumes he was great because he freed the slaves (a noble and just act, indeed), but he won by a slight margin and had very low approval ratings throughout his presidency.

JFK was not a great president either - he is remembered as such because he died in office. He was, however, skeptical of entering into the Vietnam War, which might have proved useful had he not passed away.

FDR was a good man, but badly suited for the Presidency. He overstepped the boundaries of his office many times, most notably in the "Court-packing" scandal - look it up.

Clinton was the best US President ever. The economy thrived under him and inflation was, for the most part, avoided. He reached out to minorities and women, appointing them to federal judgeships and the like. He opened doors for many and signed the Motor Voter Act, one of the most useful pieces of legislation in recent memory.

William Henry Harrison
30 days after the inauguration, he dropped dead. If more politicians followed Harrison's example, this world would be a better place.
